Is place to learn about history..

The bottom line about this "memorial park" is that one man's ego and money are more important than trying to accurately tell the story of what occurred in the community during the Civil War. Sadly the museum and the board that oversees it has done a great disservice not only to the town of Newport but to the history of it, by constantly overlooking these issues all in the name of a benefactor.

Numerous historical inaccuracies throughout the park and it is clear the designer of it gives little to no concern about presenting or depicting Civil War life in a factual or accurate manner.

As a "memorial park" those who gave their lives during the fighting of February 2, 1864 get hastily made wooden markers, yet the various donors to the park get nicely engraved metal plaques. Clearly giving money to the park is more important than Americans who fought and died near it.

Really neat place. Definitely worth checking out

I would avoid this park if possible and if you do visit, please take the information presented in it with a grain of salt as it is the result of shoddy or non-existent research. Sadly an opportunity to tell the Civil War history of Newport has been squandered by the historically inaccurate vision of one individual and the board that enables him.

During a 2015 visit to the park the number of historically inaccurate statements found in it numbered over fifty. I did make the board that oversees the park aware of this, and even offered to come back to help correct that had been done but they elected to stay on the same path. On a recent visit in March 2017 a number of the inaccurate waysides had been removed but it most cases only replaced with more inaccurate statements.

Full disclosure I was once involved with the park as a historical consultant, in fact I am the author of what is considered the standard work on the Battle of Newport Barracks, but I cut all ties to it when it was clear that presenting what occurred during the Civil War in the community took a back seat to one individual's "vision." Sadly what has emerged is an inaccurate and poorly designed park with little to no cohesive interpretation.
